                  Kosciuszko's Legacy
     Theodolite* for measuring Right Conduct
in honor of the 600th Anniversary of the Battle of Zalgiris**
Kosciuszko Memorial Observance West Point 2010

His back is turned to us
like his garden nearby, he faces the river and Saule***
still leading, surveying, What is required
remains the same
but is not.
Once eel, shad and the river flowed both ways.

Look clearly
measure more than your wants.
Measure what will be needed.

Triangulate your position
from the past, this moment
into the future that carries life both ways

From this sacred sight, where what is required has been kept
by those who pledge their honor with their lives.

*theodolite- an instrument with a spirit level that, when mounted on a tripod is used to obtain precise measurements for triangulation in civil engineering work.
Ety. unknown; Gr. theasthai, to see + hodos, way + litos, smooth; theasthai + dolichos, long, &c.  Chambers 20th Century Dictionary
