From Kosciuszko's Garden at West Point to the Kosciuska Healing Garden
Kosciuszko constructed his 18th century garden at West Point on a cliffside near the supply trail leading from the Hudson River to the forts above. It served as his private retreat for gardening and meditation. Having been educated at the Cadet School in Warsaw and tutored by military engineers in France Kosciuszko had experienced the value of education. The majority of military engineers serving in the American Revolution were from Europe, especially France. Kosciuszko and other American Revolutionary leaders encouraged the founding of a military engineering school in the United States. Kosciuszko stressed the importance of allowing all citizens the opportunity to attend, not just the wealthy privileged upper class. As a member of the lesser nobility in his own homeland he was deeply aware of the prejudice and restrictions that can accompany a hierarchical society. America embodied the dream he nurtured for his homeland. West Point became the first school of military engineering in the United States. The original home of the United States Army Corps of Engineers, now located in Washington D.C. It was the Army Corps of Engineers who designed and constructed the new levee along the river that required the removal of the original communal riverbank garden. In many ways a healing garden that heeled in the roses and other plants preserved from the original garden is most appropriately named in honor of Kosciuszko.
